EtherChannel over Dot1q Tunnels

VN:F [1.9.1_1087]
Rating: 3.9/5 (7 votes cast)
By Tyson Scott on July 12th, 2010

Background

L2-Protocol Tunnels and 802.1q tunnels seems to be a topic that often confuse people and people misunderstand the requirements to run these services.

The 802.1q tunnel feature allows a provider to tunnel customer traffic thru the provider network without revealing the underlying L2 architecture of the provider network.  In addition many customers will likely share the same L2 VLAN’s thus there is a need to keep the customer VLAN traffic separated.

A brief introduction to GNS3 and Dynamips

GNS3 is a front end for Dynamips.  Dynamips, which was written by Chris and released at http://www.ipflow.utc.fr/blog/, is the backend that emulates the router platforms.  Sadly the final version released is 2.8 RC2. Reportedly Chris had worked on some enhancements after this release but those enhancements never made it into public hands.

ISAKMP Profiles in action

VN:F [1.9.1_1087]

By Tyson Scott on June 30th, 2010

Hello Everyone,

Some time ago Brandon wrote an excellent article titled “Working with ISAKMP Profiles”. This blog is going to complement this giving you few configuration examples.

ISAKMP Profiles can be thought of VPN connection distinguishers. They group Phase 1 and 1.5 parameters and allow mapping them to different IP Security (IPSec) tunnels. This is somewhat similar to the ASA tunnel-group concept.

EIGRP Unequal Cost Load Balancing

VN:F [1.9.1_1087]
Rating: 4.4/5 (11 votes cast)
By Tyson Scott on May 3rd, 2010

In This article I would like to discuss the unequal cost load balancing feature of EIGRP and how to calculate the ratio of traffic that will be sent over each connection.

EIGRP supports load sharing traffic over multiple unequal cost paths based on the composite metric of each path.  In working on the CCIE exam it may be a requirement for you to configure both unequal cost load balancing and define the amount of traffic that should be load shared on each path.  For instance a question may state ”send 66% of traffic thru the primary path and 33% on the secondary path”.  Let’s work thru the process of calculating these ratios.
